Delta receives Niger Delta games torch

The Niger Delta Games torch arrived in Asaba on Monday, signaling Delta State’s readiness for the second edition of the regional sporting festival.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori formally received the Torch of Unity at Government House through his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme.
Onyeme described the flame as more than a ceremonial emblem, calling it a symbol of peace and collective aspiration across the Niger Delta.
He said the torch reflects a shared commitment to deploy sports as a driver of sustainable development and youth engagement.
According to him, the Games have grown into a credible avenue for discovering talent and fostering cooperation among participating states.
He noted that sports remain a strategic tool for shaping character, promoting discipline, and steering young people away from social vices.
Preparations are intensifying for the festival scheduled for February 20 to 27 in Benin City.
Onyeme assured organisers of Delta State’s full backing and urged athletes to compete with integrity and determination.
He reminded participants that they represent symbols of hope and unity beyond the quest for medals.
Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, said the state completed extensive trials to select competitors.
He disclosed that only the most dedicated athletes emerged from local and state screenings to represent Delta in 16 events.
Project consultant Itiako Ikpokpo, who led the delegation, commended the state government for its warm reception.
Ikpokpo said the Games aim to unlock abundant sporting potential within the Niger Delta region.
He revealed that more than 4,000 athletes will compete in 16 sports during the weeklong festival.
The event is sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission, reinforcing its regional development mandate.
Ikpokpo stressed that the competition prprioritised alent discovery and long-term growth over podium finishes.
He recalled that the maiden edition was hosted in Uyo last year.
The organisers expressed confidence that the upcoming edition will consolidate previous gains and deepen unity among Niger Delta states.
