FAAN, MTN launch free high-speed WiFi at Lagos, Abuja airports

In a landmark step to modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in partnership with MTN Nigeria, has officially rolled out free, high-speed WiFi services at major airports, starting with Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 2 in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The launch, conducted on Thursday, was presided over by FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Airport Operations, Capt. Abdullahi Mahmood.
Kuku described the initiative as a “major milestone” in passenger experience and digital infrastructure for Nigerian airports.
“In 21st-century Nigeria, no airport should remain an offline island.
“This partnership with MTN Nigeria demonstrates how effective public-private collaboration can transform infrastructure and strengthen our digital economy, ” she said.
Kuku revealed that the free WiFi service would soon be extended to MMIA’s Temporary Terminal and, within the next three months, to Enugu, Port Harcourt, and Kano international airports.
She emphasised that the project aligns with the federal government’s digital economy agenda and the transformative vision of the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo.
“The WiFi service we launch today is more than connectivity—it is a statement that Nigerian aviation is entering a new era of innovation, partnership, and excellence,” Kuku added, commending MTN Nigeria for its technical expertise and investment in the project.
Represented by Chief Enterprise Business Officer Lynda Saint-Nwafor, MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Karl Toriola, assured that the service would be reliable, secure, and efficient.
“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to improving passenger experience and expanding digital access across public spaces,” he said.
Toriola further noted that airports are critical hubs for business travellers, tourists, airport personnel, and service providers—all of whom require seamless connectivity.
“Passengers waiting to board, in transit, or arriving can now stay connected effortlessly,” he added.
To encourage usage, MTN Nigeria plans to roll out on-ground engagement campaigns at Lagos and Abuja airports over the next month.
The project, the telecom giant stated, reinforces its commitment to national infrastructure development and digital inclusion.
