Nigeria police expands mobile force, creates new tactical units

The Nigeria Police Force has announced a significant expansion of its Mobile Force, increasing the number of squadrons from 74 to 80 nationwide.

The initiative aims to strengthen rapid response capabilities and provide enhanced tactical support in high-risk security situations.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, disclosed the development during a meeting with the Committee of Retired Inspectors-General at Louis Edet House, Abuja.

He emphasised that the expansion would improve operational readiness and bring policing closer to communities.

In addition to the Mobile Force growth, new Area Commands and Divisions have been established in strategic locations to enhance coverage, command efficiency, and community engagement.

Egbetokun also announced the creation of a new tactical unit, the Special Intervention Squad, which has already recorded successes in targeted operations across several states.

Furthermore, the Intelligence Unit has been elevated to a full departmental status, reflecting its crucial role in proactive policing and crime prevention.

The IGP highlighted renewed emphasis on ethics, discipline, and professionalism. Weekly training sessions on policing ethics, professional conduct, and service standards are now compulsory at the State Command level to continuously build capacity and improve officer performance.

Egbetokun reaffirmed his commitment to boosting morale and ensuring fairness through a transparent, merit-based personnel management system, underlining a holistic approach to institutional reform within the Force.
