APC wins Rivers by-elections

Candidates of the All Progressives Congress have emerged victorious in the two state constituencies where by-elections were conducted in Rivers State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Ukalikpe Napoleon winner of Ahoada East State Constituency and Loolo Bulabari Henrietta winner of Khana State Constituency II.

The Returning Officer, Professor Rosemary Ogbo, announced that Ukalikpe polled 3,980 votes to secure the seat.

His closest rival, Ego Marvelous of the Action Alliance, scored 33 votes, while other candidates recorded fewer than 40 votes each.

Professor Ogbo certified that the election was duly conducted and said Ukalikpe satisfied all legal requirements to be declared winner.

The seat became vacant following the resignation of former lawmaker Edison Ehie.

In Khana Constituency II, Loolo Bulabari Henrietta secured 7,647 votes to defeat candidates of other participating parties.

The vacancy followed the death of former lawmaker Dinebari Loolo.
Observers reported that the exercise was peaceful across polling units in the affected areas.

However, the elections were marked by noticeable voter apathy and low turnout in several communities.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara had earlier urged eligible voters to participate actively in the polls.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, the governor described the contest as a family affair and called for calm.

He appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.

The Nigeria Police Force assured residents of adequate security before and during the elections.

Police spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko said officers were deployed to polling units and major roads to prevent violence and malpractice.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju also advised political actors and supporters to comply with the Electoral Act and maintain peace.
