FAAN clarifies filming rules at MMIA

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has clarified that passengers are permitted to record personal selfie videos at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The agency said intervention by airport officials only occurs when filming captures restricted security areas or other passengers without their consent.

FAAN’s statement followed an incident involving a traveller who recorded footage within a designated security screening zone at the airport.

According to the authority, clear signage at the screening area indicates that filming is prohibited for security reasons.

Airport officers reportedly advised the passenger to stop recording, citing privacy concerns and complaints often raised by other travellers.

When the passenger declined to comply, he was invited to the Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit office for clarification.

FAAN stressed that the passenger was not detained but engaged in discussions on acceptable camera use within the airport environment.

The authority said the traveller later deleted the recording, provided a written undertaking and was allowed to proceed with his journey.

The incident was brought to public attention by a social media user, Nonstop Patrick, who claimed he was stopped while using a GoPro camera.

FAAN reiterated that personal videos are not banned but urged passengers to respect airport guidelines designed to safeguard safety, privacy and smooth operations.

The agency thanked travellers for their cooperation in maintaining a secure and comfortable travel environment.
