The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says the peaceful conduct of the FCT area council elections reflects residents’ commitment to democracy and responsible governance.
Wike declared that the outcome exposed politicians who stage-manage roadside visits, buying corn and groundnuts to create what he described as deceptive campaign optics.
He said the results showed that voters can distinguish between serious leadership and what he termed “emergency democrats” seeking attention through symbolism rather than substance.
The minister’s remarks were contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, following a broadcast to residents after the polls.
Wike argued that the election confirmed growing public confidence in the ruling party and diminished the influence of opposition theatrics within the territory.
He praised President Bola Tinubu, describing the polls as a reflection of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its developmental strides in the capital.
According to him, infrastructural improvements and governance reforms in the FCT translated into electoral support for the governing party.
The minister also commended the President for backing amendments to the Electoral Act, saying the reforms have strengthened the credibility and transparency of Nigeria’s elections.
He applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting what he termed a free and fair exercise across the six area councils.
Security agencies were equally praised for maintaining order and ensuring that voters exercised their franchise without disruption.
Wike urged elected officials to serve with humility and dedication, calling on them to prioritise development, particularly in satellite towns and underserved communities.
He assured residents that the FCT administration would continue delivering democratic dividends in line with the President’s policy direction.
