APC, PDP clash over FCT poll

The All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have exchanged sharp words over the outcome of the 2026 FCT Area Council elections.
The dispute followed results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
INEC announced that the APC won five of the six chairmanship seats contested.
The PDP secured one chairmanship position in the exercise.
Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, APC spokesman Felix Morka described the outcome as a clear reflection of voters’ choices.
He said the election was duly conducted and results properly collated.
According to him, the APC’s victory aligns with growing public confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Morka argued that strengthening economic indicators contributed to positive voter sentiment.
However, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong faulted the process.
He cited low voter turnout and logistical challenges as major concerns.
Ememobong questioned delays in result collation, particularly in Kuje Area Council.
He said the lag underscored the need for real-time electronic transmission of results.
The PDP spokesman insisted his party was not reacting out of bitterness.
Rather, he said the concerns were rooted in safeguarding electoral integrity.
He also criticised movement restrictions imposed ahead of the poll.
On the role of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the parties offered contrasting views.
Morka defended Wike’s presence, saying he has the constitutional right to participate in democratic activities.
Ememobong, however, argued that the minister’s visible presence at polling areas could affect public confidence.
The elections, held on February 21, covered six area councils and 62 councillorship seats.
INEC declared the APC winner in AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, Kwali and Abaji.
The PDP clinched victory in Gwagwalada Area Council.
Observers reported generally peaceful voting despite low turnout.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar criticised the conduct of the polls.
He warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces mounting challenges.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu congratulated the winners and commended voters for participating.
