NASS vows to boost funding for Information Ministry

The National Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to increasing financial support for the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to enhance its operations.

Senator Kenneth Eze, chairman of the joint committee overseeing the ministry, made the statement during the ministry’s 2026 budget defence on Tuesday in Abuja.

Minister Alhaji Mohammed Idris and agency heads presented their budget proposals before the committee.

Eze described the ministry’s functions as essential for national development and pledged proper funding for its programs and initiatives.

He added that the committee would ensure that all appropriated funds are transparently managed and fully released for use.

Acknowledging challenges from the 2025 budget, Eze said 30 percent of capital funds were retained, while the remainder was carried into 2026 proposals.

Reforms have been introduced to improve revenue tracking and prevent fund leakages, he noted.

In a closed session, committee members assessed the proposed 2026 allocations and deemed them insufficient for effective ministry operations.

Rep. Olusola Fatoba, joint committee co-chair, said the leadership would lobby the executive to increase budget provisions.

He stressed the importance of funding in an election year, when public awareness campaigns and information dissemination are critical.

The committee planned to push for additional resources to ensure the ministry and its agencies can fulfill their statutory duties.
