Peter Obi, Akpata, ADC decry attack on party Chieftains in Edo

Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have condemned a violent incident in Edo State that targeted key party figures, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining democratic norms.

The attack reportedly took place shortly after ADC members, including Olumide Akpata, visited the party secretariat to formalise Akpata’s membership.

Upon returning, the delegation was confronted by gunmen at the residence of former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City.

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and a prominent ADC figure, described the assault as an affront to Nigeria’s democracy.

He promised to report the incident to the appropriate authorities and pursue accountability for those responsible.

“We cannot allow acts of violence to dictate political participation,” Obi said.

“Government officials must protect citizens, not intimidate them. Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Obi also criticised the APC-led federal government, claiming that its policies have eroded democratic institutions and worsened poverty levels across the country.

“Those who once claimed to champion democracy are now dismantling it.

“Our economy, governance, and judicial systems are under strain, and millions of Nigerians are facing greater hardship, ” he said.

Olumide Akpata, who previously contested the Edo governorship under the Labour Party banner, also condemned the attack, underscoring the importance of a secure political environment for all parties.

The ADC, through its spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, denounced the incident as a “disturbing development” and reiterated the party’s commitment to peaceful political engagement.

“Violence and intimidation are tools of fear. We will continue to advocate for a Nigeria where opposition voices are protected and citizens can exercise their rights freely,” he said.

The party called on both state and federal authorities to ensure that such attacks do not recur, emphasizing the need for robust security measures to safeguard political activities.

The Edo incident has raised fresh concerns over political safety ahead of upcoming elections, highlighting tensions between opposition parties and the ruling APC in several states.
