Tinubu accepts Egbetokun’s resignation, appoints Tunji Disu as acting IGP

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, citing pressing family reasons, and has named Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the acting head of the Nigeria Police Force.
The announcement was made through a statement by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday in Abuja.
President Tinubu commended Egbetokun for his decades of dedicated service, highlighting his professionalism, commitment, and efforts toward strengthening internal security across the country.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term under the amended Police Act, had his tenure scheduled to end in June 2027.
His resignation, however, came amid ongoing national security challenges, prompting swift action from the presidency to ensure continuity of leadership within the police force.
Tunji Disu, now the acting IGP, brings extensive operational experience and strategic knowledge to the role, which the President said would provide stability at a critical time.
In line with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s confirmation as the substantive Inspector-General, after which his name would be forwarded to the Senate for final approval.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to bolstering national security and enhancing the institutional capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasising that strong leadership and operational readiness remain a top priority.
