South-East governors pledge N25bn boost for SEDC 2026

The five governors of Abia State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Enugu State, and Imo State have agreed to contribute N5 billion each toward the 2026 allocation for the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), totaling N25 billion.

The announcement was made by Orji Uzor Kalu while submitting SEDC’s 2026 budget report to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Kalu explained that the additional funds were intended to reactivate stalled projects and accelerate development across the five states.

“The commission received hardly any funding in the 2025 fiscal year. Consequently, several projects and strategic initiatives were suspended and remain pending.

“This additional provision will enable SEDC to accelerate development in health and education, in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ” Kalu said.

The initiative followed consultations with governors and stakeholders to ensure that the 2026 budget translates into impactful, development-driven project execution across the region.

Responding on behalf of the Appropriations Committee, Mohammed Monguno praised the South-East governors’ commitment and expressed hope that other geopolitical zones would emulate their example.

The 2026 budget boost aims to restore developmental momentum across the South-East and support projects in key sectors critical to regional growth.
