Presidency reaffirms support for committee against social vices in schools

Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, has reiterated the Federal Government’s backing for the Special Committee on Campaign Against Social Vices in Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, calling its mandate “critical to Nigeria’s future.”
Speaking at the State House, on Thursday in Abuja, Gbajabiamila commended the committee’s integrity and capacity, noting that its designation as a “special committee” reflects the importance of addressing rising social vices among Nigerian youths.
He stressed that tackling these challenges requires a whole-of-society approach, involving parents, teachers, religious leaders, communities, and relevant institutions.
“It takes a community to raise a child… We cannot sit back and do nothing and expect this country to grow or develop if we do not start from the foundation,” Gbajabiamila said.
Highlighting the link between law and morality, he described moral reorientation as essential for addressing issues such as cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and cybercrime in schools.
He also announced a N50 million seed donation to support the committee’s work, with the first N25 million to be released immediately.
Committee Chairman, Professor Jerry Ugokwe, expressed gratitude and outlined the committee’s activities, including sensitisation campaigns, policy recommendations, and promoting discipline and responsible leadership.
The committee has already engaged with students in Edo and Kwara States and is preparing for a national launch at the State House Conference Hall.
Senior Special Assistant on Student Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon, underscored the urgency of the initiative, noting its alignment with the government’s broader youth development agenda and confirming budgetary provisions by the Federal Ministry of Education for the 2025 fiscal year.
This initiative reflects a structured presidential intervention aimed at strengthening student welfare, campus security, and academic excellence nationwide.
