Court grants Ozekhome N10m bail

Justice Chizoba Oji of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has granted bail to senior lawyer Mike Ozekhome and co-defendant Ponfa Useni.
The defendants were arraigned on a 12-count criminal charge filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.
They both pleaded not guilty to allegations bordering on forgery and related offences.
The prosecutors accused them of falsifying documents, including an international passport and an irrevocable power of attorney.
The documents were allegedly used to lay claim to a London property linked to the late Jeremiah Useni.
Counsel to the Attorney General did not oppose the bail applications moved by defence lawyers.
In her ruling, Justice Oji granted each defendant bail in the sum of N10 million.
She directed that each must produce one surety with landed property within the Federal Capital Territory.
The court also ordered the defendants to deposit their international passports.
Justice Oji noted that proceedings held on a Friday allowed temporary release if conditions were unmet immediately.
She ruled that the defendants might return home but must perfect bail conditions by Monday.
Failure to comply, the judge warned, would result in their remand in custody.
Further proceedings in the matter are expected to continue at a later date.
