Kano Assembly moves to impeach deputy governor Gwarz

The Kano State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The notice was presented during plenary by the House Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, citing Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.

Dala said the allegations relate to Gwarzo’s tenure as commissioner for local government (2023–2024) and as deputy governor.

He is accused of diverting funds from Kano State’s 44 local government councils.

Between June 2023 and January 2024, Gwarzo allegedly received N1.5 million monthly from each council, totaling N462 million.

Additional payments from February to July 2024 reportedly amounted to N726 million.

Dala also claimed Gwarzo facilitated N10 million payments from each council to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited, totaling N440 million, violating procurement laws.

“The misuse of official capacity to confer undue advantage constitutes abuse of power,” Dala said.

The impeachment notice was endorsed by 38 lawmakers, meeting the constitutional requirement.

The House Speaker acknowledged receipt, and the next steps may involve serving the allegations and setting up an investigative panel.

As of filing, Deputy Governor Gwarzo had not publicly responded.
