MultiChoice to close Showmax streaming service after 11 years

MultiChoice has announced that it will shut down its over-the-top streaming service, Showmax, after more than a decade of operation.
The streaming platform, which launched in 2015 in South Africa, rapidly expanded across the continent, providing access to movies, series, documentaries, and sports content to subscribers in numerous countries.
The company communicated the decision to Showmax users via email on Thursday, stating, “Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has decided to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future.”
MultiChoice explained that the move aligns with its strategy to “strengthen our overall digital offering and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.”
Subscribers were reassured that their current service would not be interrupted immediately, with the platform noting, “You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time.”
MultiChoice emphasised that it would provide timely updates regarding timelines and any next steps to ensure a smooth transition for customers.
Showmax, which entered the market to compete with international streaming giants, has played a key role in making online entertainment accessible across Africa.
Over the years, the platform built a strong footprint, blending local and international content to meet the growing demand for digital entertainment.
Last year, South African authorities approved the acquisition of MultiChoice by French media conglomerate Canal+, parent company of StudioCanal.
The deal includes Africa’s largest pay-TV operations, DStv and GOtv, with Canal+ offering ZAR 125 ($7.11) per share for outstanding MultiChoice shares it did not already own.
The acquisition carried specific public interest commitments aimed at boosting the participation of historically disadvantaged persons (HDPs) and small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa’s audiovisual industry.
Additionally, the agreement guarantees continued investment in local entertainment and sports content.
To comply with South African broadcasting regulations, MultiChoice’s South African licensee would be restructured into an independent entity with a majority HDP ownership, as part of a structural arrangement announced in February.
Despite Showmax’s closure, MultiChoice said its subscribers remained a priority, promising clear communication about the shutdown and future plans.
