U.S. embassy suspends services over protest fears

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has temporarily suspended routine consular services in Abuja due to concerns over potential protests in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a notice shared on the social media platform X on Thursday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced that the embassy would remain closed for routine operations until Monday, March 9, 2026.
The temporary closure affects visa interviews and American Citizen Services (ACS) appointments that had been scheduled earlier in the week.
According to the notice, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure in response to the possibility of protests within the Nigerian capital.
“Due to the potential for protests in Abuja, the U.S. Embassy will be closed for routine business until Monday, March 9, 2026,” the statement said.
The embassy explained that visa appointments previously scheduled for March 4 and March 5, along with ACS appointments fixed for March 5, have been postponed.
Applicants affected by the change have been advised to check their email notifications or the online appointment system for their updated interview dates.
“Visa applicants should check their email or AVITs account for their new appointment date,” the embassy stated.
For those seeking American Citizen Services, the mission urged them to monitor their email for updated scheduling information.
The embassy further advised applicants who have not received new appointment notifications to contact the mission through official support channels.
“Visa applicants who do not see a new appointment should contact us through our Visa Navigator for assistance,” the notice added.
The U.S. Mission encouraged the public to stay informed by monitoring its official website and social media platforms for further updates as the situation develops.
Officials also thanked applicants for their patience and cooperation during the temporary disruption of services.
