Peter Obi, Umeh, Ben Obi launch ADC registration in Anambra

Presidential aspirant and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, alongside Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and former lawmaker and presidential aide Senator Ben Obi, formally registered with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday, marking the flag-off of the party’s membership registration exercise in the state.
The event, held across multiple wards in Anambra, was aimed at mobilising supporters to register and encouraging new members to join the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi registered at Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA, Umeh at Aguluzigbo Ward 1, Anaocha LGA, and Ben Obi at Agulu Awka, Awka South LGA.
During the exercise, the ADC leaders raised concerns over the recently passed Electoral Act 2026, warning that several provisions could facilitate electoral manipulation.
Obi alleged that the law was crafted to influence the outcome of the 2027 elections.
“All the laws being hurriedly churned out now are simply aimed at enabling them to snatch the 2027 presidential election and run away with it,” Obi said.
He added that INEC’s interference in internal party processes undermines democratic principles. “INEC should focus on how to conduct elections.
They now choose to abandon their work as referee and then want to teach a coach how to select their players,” he remarked.
Obi further criticised the current administration’s prioritisation of electoral control over governance, noting persistent power supply challenges in the country.
“This time, we will not let them run,” he said, stressing that the ADC sought to offer an alternative to “bad leadership” in the 2027 polls.
On the party’s prospects, Obi highlighted collaborative efforts across the South-east and beyond to create a united opposition front.
“All the notable political leaders are here in ADC and we are discussing with other parts of the country,” he said, urging Nigerians to register massively with the party.
Senator Ben Obi, who chaired the event, emphasised the party’s commitment to unity and electoral success, assuring supporters that the goal remained to secure Peter Obi’s presidency.
“No one will be cheated. We all have one goal and the goal is to ensure that Peter Obi becomes the president,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rt. Hon. Benchuks Nwosu, chairman of the registration committee, disclosed that each of the 326 wards in Anambra State would receive 150 membership cards, with one register per ward for the first phase of registration.
