Dickson calls for stronger women representation in governance

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson has called for stronger policies and deliberate action to expand women’s participation in governance, leadership, and economic development in Nigeria.

In a message marking the global celebration, Dickson joined millions across Nigeria and the international community in recognising the strength, resilience, and contributions of women to families, communities, and national development.

The senator described women as the backbone of society, noting that their roles as caregivers, entrepreneurs, professionals, educators, and leaders continue to shape the country’s economy and strengthen democratic institutions.

“Across Nigeria and the world, women play vital roles in nurturing families, building businesses, educating future generations, and contributing to governance.

“Their contributions are indispensable to nation-building and sustainable development, ” he said.

Despite progress made in recent years, Dickson acknowledged that significant gaps still exist, particularly in the areas of political representation, leadership, and equal opportunity.

He stressed that achieving a thriving democracy requires the active involvement of women in leadership and decision-making, adding that he has consistently supported policies aimed at promoting women’s empowerment throughout his years in public service.

Dickson also linked this year’s celebration to the recent emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a political party he leads as National Leader.

According to him, the party was formally registered and publicly presented just days ago and is already attracting national attention.

He described the NDC as a political platform committed to advancing affirmative action and improving women’s representation in governance, arguing that Nigeria currently trails behind many African countries in giving women leadership opportunities.

“The NDC is deeply concerned about the lack of adequate representation and empowerment of women in governance.

“Women deserve a special place in leadership, as seen in other parts of the world, ” he said.

Referencing the 2026 International Women’s Day theme: “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls,” the senator urged governments, institutions, and communities to intensify efforts toward removing barriers that limit women’s participation in politics and economic life.

He emphasised the need for collective action to build a society where women’s voices are heard, their leadership welcomed, and their potential fully realised.

Dickson celebrated Nigerian women for their courage and dedication, encouraging them to remain proud of their contributions to the nation and never give up on their aspirations.

“To all Nigerian women, mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, and friends, I celebrate your enduring contributions to our nation and our world.

“Happy International Women’s Day, ” he said.
