PSC denies allegations of paid police promotions

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has rejected claims that police promotions were monetised, describing the allegations as baseless and an attempt to tarnish the reputations of both the Commission and the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement by Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the PSC, responded to a report by an online news platform alleging that senior officers paid N5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
“The Commission categorically denies these unfounded allegations in their entirety and regards the report as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and damage our integrity,” Kalu said.
The PSC stressed that promotions from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to ACP strictly follow merit-based procedures under the Commission’s statutory framework.
It clarified that while the Inspector-General of Police may forward recommendations based on performance and vacancies, final approval rests solely with the Commission.
Referring to documents cited in the report, including internal police communications, the Commission said they only reflect routine administrative approvals and do not indicate any financial transactions.
The PSC urged the public to disregard the claims and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and merit-based promotions.
It also encouraged anyone with credible evidence of misconduct to submit petitions directly to the Commission.
The PSC disclosed that it is considering legal action against the news outlet over alleged defamation and damage to its reputation.
