Tinubu meets Finance Minister‑nominee Oyedele on fiscal reforms

President Bola Tinubu on Monday received Taiwo Oyedele, the nominee for Minister of State for Finance, at the State House in Abuja, marking Oyedele’s first official audience with the President since his nomination was announced last week.

The meeting, which took place in the President’s first-floor office, provided an opportunity for the two leaders to deliberate on Nigeria’s ongoing fiscal reform agenda and strategies to strengthen public finance management.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the session focused on enhancing tax administration, broadening the country’s revenue base, and reinforcing fiscal policy frameworks to ensure long-term economic stability.

Before his nomination, Oyedele had been actively engaged in consultations with the Presidency and other senior government officials on critical matters relating to tax reforms, revenue mobilisation, and broader economic policy initiatives.

He served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, which successfully developed four consolidated tax laws that came into effect in January this year, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s tax system.

In his role as Minister of State for Finance, pending Senate confirmation, Oyedele is expected to work closely with Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, to implement policies aimed at boosting revenue, promoting fiscal discipline, and improving the efficiency of Nigeria’s public finance system.

Analysts said his appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to deepening tax reforms and enhancing fiscal stability amid growing economic pressures.

While the details of the private meeting were not publicly disclosed, aides noted that the discussions would help shape immediate priorities for the Finance Ministry once Oyedele assumes office.
