Turaki group heads to supreme court over PDP convention

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki has rejected the judgment of the Court of Appeal nullifying the party’s national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, announcing plans to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.
The group made its position known on Monday through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, shortly after the appellate court upheld the earlier decision of a Federal High Court that restrained the party from conducting the convention.
Ememobong said the faction disagreed with the interpretation of the law adopted by the Appeal Court and would seek a final determination from the apex court.
According to him, the dispute centres on the legal interpretation surrounding the role of the party’s National Legal Adviser and the authority under which certain actions were taken ahead of the convention.
“The issues involved are matters of legal interpretation,” he said, adding that the judgment relied on the position that the National Legal Adviser had been suspended and therefore lacked the authority to act on behalf of the party.
Meanwhile, another faction of the party backed by Nyesom Wike has maintained that the PDP’s next national convention will proceed as scheduled.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, non Monday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee, Haruna Mohammed, said preparations were already underway for the convention slated for March 29 and 30.
He explained that the faction had complied with earlier court directives by conducting ward and local government congresses across the country.
According to him, the party will hold its state congresses before proceeding to the national convention later in the month.
Mohammed also disclosed that a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was scheduled to take place soon.
While reacting to the Turaki group’s plan to approach the Supreme Court, he said the faction was free to pursue any legal option it deemed appropriate.
The dispute followed Monday’s ruling by the Court of Appeal, which upheld the earlier judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja that restrained the PDP from conducting the November 2025 national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam ruled that the party failed to comply with constitutional requirements governing the conduct of such conventions.
The court held that the PDP did not properly notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as required by law before holding the convention.
The appellate court also dismissed the PDP’s argument that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case, affirming that the lower court acted within its powers in determining the matter.
