PDP BoT meets over Appeal court verdict

Top figures of the Peoples Democratic Party gathered in Abuja on Tuesday for an emergency meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) following a recent court ruling affecting the party’s national convention.

The meeting, chaired by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, took place on Tuesday at the residence of Bala Mohammed.

Among those present were Seyi Makinde, Tanimu Turaki, and the party’s acting National Chairman Umar Damagum.

Other party elders in attendance included Bode George, Jerry Gana, and former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu.

In his opening remarks, Wabara described the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal Nigeria as a moment for the party to reorganise and strengthen its internal structures.

Earlier in the day, a caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman Mohamed addressed journalists, describing the appellate court decision as confirmation of the committee’s authority as the legitimate leadership of the party.

Mohamed said preparations for the party’s national convention would proceed as planned, with the event expected to take place later this month.

The emergency meeting followed a judgment delivered on Monday by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which upheld an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court Nigeria that restrained the party from conducting its national convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam, the appellate court dismissed the party’s appeal challenging the jurisdiction of the lower court.

The court ruled that the PDP failed to comply with constitutional and legal requirements governing political party conventions.

According to the judgment, the party did not properly notify the Independent National Electoral Commission as required by law, and necessary congresses were not conducted in at least 14 states, as stipulated by electoral guidelines.

The court further held that the issues raised in the case could not be treated as mere internal party matters, stressing that adherence to the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and party regulations is essential to safeguarding democratic governance.

The ruling has triggered renewed internal discussions within the PDP as party leaders seek a path forward ahead of the planned convention.
