At least one Nigerian injured in UAE missile interception amid Iran conflict

Amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region, at least one Nigerian has been identified among dozens of people injured during the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The UAE Defence Ministry reported that since the conflict began on February 28, Iranian forces have launched 262 ballistic missiles, of which 241 were successfully intercepted, 19 fell into the sea, and 2 landed on UAE territory.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the UAE defence ministry said its air defence systems have detected 262 ballistic missiles fired from Iran since the conflict began on February 28.

According to the ministry, 241 of the missiles were successfully intercepted and destroyed, while 19 fell into the sea. Two missiles landed within the country’s territory.

The attacks caused six deaths involving citizens from UAE, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, along with 122 minor to moderate injuries affecting multiple nationalities, including a Nigerian.

UAE authorities emphasised that their air defence systems remain active, intercepting ongoing missile and drone attacks while protecting national interests.

The situation has prompted concern among foreign nationals, including Nigerians in the region.

Many have urged the Nigerian government to arrange evacuation flights. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, stated that the government is ready to begin repatriation efforts once airspace restrictions are lifted.

This incident highlights the broader risks to international civilians amid the Iran-Gulf conflict and underscores the need for urgent diplomatic and protective measures for stranded citizens.
