Lagos Assembly proposes relocation of waterfront communities after demolitions

The Lagos State House of Assembly has recommended relocating residents of Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Sogunro waterfront communities to a new site in Agbowa, Epe Local Government Area, following the demolition of structures in these settlements.
The resolution came after the Assembly adopted a report from its Standing Committee on Rules and Business on the recent demolition exercise during Wednesday’s plenary.
In December 2025, the Lagos State Government began removing structures around the Third Mainland Bridge, citing them as “illicit.”
The demolitions displaced numerous residents, prompting protests and petitions to the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
The committee, chaired by Hon. Noheem Adams, conducted five meetings with affected residents, visited the communities with government officials, and concluded that the demolitions had destroyed homes, property, and livelihoods.
Many residents rely on fishing and have lived in these areas for decades, with conditions worsening post-demolition.
Relocate displaced residents to a low-cost housing estate in Agbowa, allowing them to continue fishing.
The Special Adviser on E-GIS should review the enumeration report for Makoko, Sogunro, and Oko-Agbon communities.
Engage the Oloto of the Otto family in the upcoming water city project, recognizing them as the original landowners.
The Lagos State Government earlier announced a $10 million investment in the water city project, aimed at modernizing the state’s waterfront fishing communities.
The Assembly’s recommendations are aimed at balancing urban development with the protection of long-standing community livelihoods.
