Lagos revives monthly environmental sanitation after decade

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, has officially announced the return of the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, bringing back a programme that had been suspended for nearly a decade.

The governor unveiled the initiative during a symbolic flag-off event organised by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources along Mushin–Agege Motor Road in Lagos.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the sanitation programme will resume on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and will be held on the last Saturday of every month.

The exercise is scheduled to run between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., during which residents are expected to clean their surroundings in order to maintain a healthier environment across the state.

Unlike the previous sanitation arrangement, the governor explained that the reintroduced exercise would not include restrictions on movement.

The earlier sanitation programme had been suspended roughly ten years ago following a court ruling that prohibited government-imposed movement restrictions during the exercise.

Sanwo-Olu clarified that while residents will still be encouraged to participate actively in cleaning their environment, the government will rely on cooperation, awareness, and enforcement rather than limiting movement.

The governor urged residents of Lagos to adopt a culture of environmental responsibility and proper waste management.

He advised citizens to avoid littering their surroundings and to ensure that waste is properly disposed of only when their designated private waste collectors arrive.

According to him, maintaining a clean city requires collective effort from both government institutions and the public.

Sanwo-Olu said the sanitation initiative is intended to revive the environmental consciousness that once formed part of daily life in Lagos communities.

He described the relaunch as a renewed appeal for residents to take responsibility for keeping their neighbourhoods clean and safe.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving environmental management across Lagos.

He said the government would continue to strengthen waste management systems, expand drainage infrastructure, and intensify environmental enforcement measures across the state’s local government areas.

Sanwo-Olu noted that achieving a cleaner Lagos would require consistent effort and cooperation from residents.

According to him, the goal of transforming the city into a healthier and more organised environment cannot be achieved overnight but will depend on the collective actions of communities working together.

He expressed confidence that the renewed sanitation programme would help promote cleaner neighbourhoods and improve public health across Lagos.
