Tinubu mourns former Super Eagles star Nwosu

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family of Henry Onyemanze Nwosu, the former Super Eagles midfielder who passed away on Saturday at the age of 62.

In a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu joined the Nigerian football community in mourning the loss of the national sports icon.

He described Nwosu as an exceptionally skilled player whose artistry and vision on the field left a lasting impression.

Recalling Nwosu’s early achievements, Tinubu highlighted the midfielder’s role as a 17-year-old member of the Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He also noted Nwosu’s sustained contributions to the national team over more than a decade, including appearances in subsequent AFCON tournaments in 1982, 1984, and 1988.

“Henry Nwosu brought pride and joy to Nigerians through his performances and inspired countless young people to pursue excellence in sports,” the President said, acknowledging the former player’s continued involvement in the development of football in Nigeria after retiring from active play.

Tinubu described Nwosu as a dedicated sportsman whose impact on Nigerian football will not be forgotten and prayed for the repose of his soul.

He also asked God to grant comfort and strength to the late footballer’s family and loved ones during this period of mourning.
