Passengers injured in Abuja-Kaduna train incident

Several passengers sustained injuries on Monday following a train incident along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed.
The incident occurred near Asham Train Station at about 10:30 a.m., involving a technical fault that led to contact between a rear locomotive and the passenger coach directly behind it.
According to the Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, the collision was caused by a coupling issue.
He, however, assured that no lives were lost in the incident.
Opeifa explained that emergency response measures were immediately activated, with injured passengers receiving prompt medical attention before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
Technical teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to assess the situation and carry out necessary repairs, while officials from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau commenced a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the fault.
Despite the disruption, the train was able to resume its journey after the affected locomotive and coach were detached.
It eventually arrived at Idu Train Station at approximately 10:39 a.m., behind its scheduled time.
The NRC reiterated its commitment to passenger safety, stating that measures are being strengthened to prevent similar occurrences and ensure the reliability of rail services across the country.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the condition of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, particularly on the Abuja–Kaduna route, which has recorded a number of operational challenges in recent times.
In response to recurring derailments and technical failures, the Nigerian Senate had in 2025 initiated a nationwide investigation into the state of the rail system.
The probe, chaired by Adams Oshiomhole, is expected to examine the underlying causes of persistent rail incidents and recommend solutions to improve safety and efficiency in the sector.
