FG declares 2-day public holiday for Eid-el-Fitr

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, 19 March, and Friday, 20 March 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, signaling the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of the government.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the declaration, extended warm greetings and congratulations to the Muslim faithful across the nation for successfully completing the period of fasting and devotion.

In his message, the Minister encouraged Muslims to continue practicing the virtues emphasised during Ramadan, including love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice.

He also urged all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the nation’s unity, peace, and prosperity.

“While wishing our Muslim brothers and sisters a joyful Eid-el-Fitr, we call on everyone to celebrate responsibly and to extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in society,” the statement read.

The Ministry further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting national cohesion and peaceful coexistence among all citizens.

As celebrations get underway, communities across the country are expected to hold prayers, festive gatherings, and acts of charity in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Muslims in various states have already begun congregating for Eid prayers, with images from the Al Habibiyah Mosque in Guzape, Abuja, showing large crowds performing the ritual prayer under the clear morning sky, reflecting the nationwide spirit of unity and devotion.

The declaration underscores the government’s recognition of the cultural and religious significance of Eid-el-Fitr, ensuring citizens have the time to observe the celebrations fully.
