The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has visited victims of the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, assuring residents of intensified security measures to prevent further attacks.
During the visit on Tuesday, the police chief met with injured victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where he expressed sympathy to those affected and their families.
He also carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the blast site at the popular Monday Market.
The IGP reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to track down and dismantle networks responsible for the attacks, describing the incident as a tragic assault on public safety.
As part of his engagements, Disu held security review meetings at the Borno State Government House and the State Police Command Headquarters, aimed at strengthening coordination among security agencies.
He emphasised that security presence across Maiduguri has been significantly reinforced, with increased police deployment, expanded surveillance operations, and joint task force collaborations involving the military and other agencies.
Police authorities confirmed that at least 23 people lost their lives, while 108 others sustained injuries in the coordinated explosions, which are believed to have been carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
Emergency responders, including joint security teams and humanitarian agencies, have since evacuated victims, while hospitals continue to provide medical care to the injured.
Following the attacks, President Bola Tinubu condemned the incident and ordered security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to take charge of operations on ground.
The President described the attacks as desperate acts by criminal elements attempting to spread fear, assuring Nigerians that security forces would intensify efforts to eliminate terrorist threats nationwide.
The police authorities said additional equipment and operational support have been deployed to strengthen ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges in Borno State, even as officials insist that coordinated measures are being strengthened to restore confidence and safeguard lives and property.
