Fubara nears completion of key Rivers highway

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, has announced that the 33.5-kilometre Elele–Umudioga–Egbeda–Ubimini–Ikiri–Omoku Road project is now 90 per cent complete, with inauguration scheduled for May 2026.

Speaking after an inspection tour of the dual carriageway on Wednesday, the governor expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, noting that the project cuts across Ikwerre, Emohua, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas.

Fubara described the road as a major infrastructure milestone that would significantly ease transportation challenges and improve security along the corridor, which has long been associated with criminal activities.

“From my assessment, about 90 percent of the job is already done, and the remaining aspects will be delivered before the end of April.

“This is not just a road project but a signature achievement of our administration, aimed at expanding the state’s road network and boosting economic activities, ” the governor stated.

The governor highlighted the economic importance of the project, particularly its role in opening up access to Omoku, widely known as the “Gas City” of the state.

According to him, improved connectivity will stimulate commerce and attract further investments to the area.

He also underscored the security benefits, recalling that the road was once considered a dangerous route plagued by kidnappings and other criminal acts.

With the near completion of the project, Fubara expressed confidence that such incidents would be drastically reduced due to easier access for security agencies.

Residents and commuters, he noted, can now look forward to safer and smoother travel once the road is fully operational.

The governor commended the contractor for maintaining quality standards and meeting timelines, particularly in the construction of a key bridge along the route.

He expressed optimism that all outstanding work would be completed before the end of April, paving the way for official inauguration in May.
