Sultan declares Friday as Eid day

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal, marking the celebration of Eid al-Fitr in Nigeria.

The announcement followed the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on Wednesday, which was the 29th day of Ramadan.

In a statement issued by the Sultanate Council through its Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, it was confirmed that no credible reports of moon sighting were received from across the country.

As a result, Thursday, March 19, was declared the 30th day of Ramadan, in line with Islamic tradition.

By this declaration, Muslims across Nigeria will observe Eid al-Fitr on Friday, bringing an end to the month-long fasting period.

The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan.

He urged continued prayers for peace, unity, and national development.

The Federal Government had earlier declared Thursday and Friday as public holidays to mark the celebration, reinforcing preparations nationwide.

Similarly, Saudi Arabia had announced Friday as Eid day after confirming that the fasting month would complete 30 days due to the absence of crescent moon sighting.

Eid al-Fitr, one of the most important festivals in Islam, is observed with prayers, charity, and communal celebrations.

It signifies the end of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset and engage in acts of devotion and generosity.
