Police arrest 4 over attempted murder in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the police command in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a 70-year-old man and three others over alleged involvement in attempted murder and cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.

The suspects, identified as Okon Akpan, 70, John Samson, 45, Emmanuel Asuquo, 50, and Idorenyin Umoh, 22, were apprehended on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village following intelligence-led operations by security agents.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the arrests were made after authorities received and approved a petition detailing allegations of attempted murder, malicious destruction of property, and cult-related activities within the area.

She explained that the operation was part of broader efforts by the police to combat violent crimes and dismantle criminal networks across the state.

During the raid, officers recovered a locally made pistol and two long guns from the suspects, reinforcing suspicions of their involvement in unlawful and violent acts.

The police described the operation as a significant breakthrough, noting that it was executed with precision based on credible intelligence.

The police further disclosed that investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal group.

Residents have been assured that the situation in the area remains calm and under control, with proactive security measures already in place to prevent any escalation.

The police also confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
