Russia hosts classical concert in Abuja to boost cultural ties

The Embassy of Russia in Nigeria staged a classical music concert in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen cultural relations between the two countries.
The event brought together diplomats, academics, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public, and featured performances by young musicians from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
Speaking at the concert, Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podelyshev, described the event as a significant step toward reviving cultural dialogue between Russia and Nigeria.
“This evening is not simply a concert; it is an important step toward strengthening cultural dialogu and bringing our peoples closer through music,” he said.
The ambassador noted that the initiative was supported by the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the cultural relations department of Russia’s foreign ministry.
He added that the concert marked the first major cultural event organised by the Russian Embassy in Nigeria in several years, signalling a renewed push to deepen bilateral engagement through the arts.
Podelyshev also acknowledged the support of Nigerian institutions, including the National Universities Commission, the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Special recognition was given to Abba Music School for coordinating the event and facilitating the participation of the visiting musicians.
The envoy expressed optimism about expanding cultural exchange, noting that Russia is open to hosting Nigerian artists and creative groups to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Guests were treated to a selection of classical masterpieces from Russian and global traditions, highlighting the technical excellence of the performers.
