Man City defeat Arsenal to lift league cup

Manchester City claimed the League Cup title with a convincing 2–0 victory over Arsenal in Sunday’s final at Wembley Stadium, capitalising on costly errors to secure their ninth triumph in the competition.
The match turned decisively in the second half after a mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga allowed Nico O’Reilly to open the scoring.
The young midfielder went on to net a second goal just four minutes later, sealing victory and delivering another major trophy for City manager Pep Guardiola.
Kepa’s error revived memories of his difficult history in the competition, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faced scrutiny for selecting him ahead of first-choice goalkeeper David Raya, a decision that ultimately proved costly.
Despite the defeat, Arsenal remain in contention for major honours this season, maintaining a strong position in the Premier League title race while also progressing in both domestic and European competitions.
For Manchester City, the victory marked a significant turnaround after a challenging campaign that saw them fall behind in the league and exit the UEFA Champions League at the round-of-16 stage.
The triumph also represented Guardiola’s fifth League Cup success, underlining his continued impact at the club.
The first half saw Arsenal apply early pressure, with Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka both denied by an impressive triple save from City goalkeeper James Trafford.
However, the Gunners struggled to maintain attacking momentum and failed to capitalise on their early chances.
City returned after the break with renewed intensity, dominating possession and creating sustained pressure.
Their breakthrough came when a cross from Rayan Cherki slipped through Kepa’s hands, allowing O’Reilly to score from close range.
Moments later, the midfielder struck again, finishing off a well-delivered cross from Matheus Nunes to double City’s lead and effectively end the contest.
The result extends Manchester City’s dominance in the competition and provides a morale boost as they seek to close the gap in the league standings.
For Arsenal, the loss ends their hopes of securing a first trophy since 2020, though their broader campaign remains on track.
Guardiola celebrated passionately at full-time, reflecting the importance of the victory as his side ended their recent trophy drought and reaffirmed their status as one of England’s top teams.
