Tinubu meets govs, pledges security push

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to tackle insecurity across the country, assuring Nigerians of intensified efforts to curb threats to peace and stability.
The president made this known on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The gathering, he noted, reflected unity, cooperation, and shared commitment among the nation’s leadership.
Addressing the governors, Tinubu described insecurity as a major obstacle to development, warning that it undermines economic growth and national prosperity.
He stressed that the next phase of governance must focus squarely on confronting security challenges nationwide.
The president disclosed that his administration is strengthening international partnerships to improve Nigeria’s security capacity.
He revealed ongoing engagements with global allies, including discussions in the United Kingdom and with Emmanuel Macron, aimed at securing equipment and operational support for security agencies.
According to him, collaboration with foreign partners remains crucial in enhancing Nigeria’s ability to combat criminality and safeguard lives and property.
Tinubu also urged state governors to prioritise the welfare of vulnerable citizens, especially in light of the economic pressures triggered by the ongoing Middle East crisis.
He noted that rising global tensions have contributed to inflation and reduced purchasing power, placing additional strain on ordinary Nigerians.
“We must show greater concern for the vulnerable in our society,” the president said, adding that governments at all levels should introduce measures to cushion the effects of rising energy and transportation costs.
The president also called on governors to remain focused and resilient in translating their policy ideas into tangible programmes that directly improve citizens’ livelihoods.
He encouraged them to support federal efforts in confronting criminal elements and restoring public confidence.
Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed appreciation to the president for his continued engagement with state governments.
He noted that governors were working collectively to address insecurity and improve governance outcomes.
AbdulRazaq revealed that discussions on the establishment of state police were ongoing, with inputs from security agencies and stakeholders.
He added that the forum plans to forward its recommendations to the National Assembly to develop an appropriate legal framework.
The meeting was attended by several governors from across the federation, including those of Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Delta, and other states, alongside senior government officials.
The Eid gathering provided an opportunity for federal and state leaders to reflect on national challenges and reinforce their commitment to unity, security, and economic stability.
