EU seeks stronger Nigeria partnership

The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Nigeria, focusing on security, trade, and other critical sectors amid shifting global dynamics.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, made this known on Monday during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his residence in Lagos.
Kallas said discussions during the meeting centred on expanding cooperation in key areas, including security, trade, investment, and critical raw materials.
“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria, and today we explored new ways to collaborate across key sectors,” she said.
She noted that the current global geopolitical climate requires countries that uphold a rules-based international system to strengthen partnerships and work more closely together.
“The global security situation is very serious, and countries that value the international rules-based system must continue to work together,” she added.
Kallas also highlighted ongoing talks to enhance collaboration in cybersecurity and broader security frameworks to address emerging threats.
According to her, both sides are exploring new opportunities to expand cooperation in these areas, given the increasing importance of digital and security infrastructure.
She further pointed to the potential for increased trade and investment between both parties, noting that the EU is keen to strengthen economic engagement with Nigeria.
“On issues of investment and trade, there is scope for more collaboration, particularly in areas that support sustainable growth,” she said, adding that critical raw materials remain a shared area of interest.
In his remarks, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with the EU across multiple sectors.
He expressed appreciation for the union’s continued support in development, security, and economic cooperation, stressing Nigeria’s openness to partnerships that promote shared prosperity and long-term stability.
The President added that Nigeria remains committed to building relationships that will drive sustainable development and mutual benefits.
The meeting was also attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Bagudu.
