Osimhen eyes Istanbulspor, plans African talent pipeline

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is reportedly planning to acquire Turkish club Istanbulspor, signaling ambitions that extend well beyond his playing career and could transform talent development between Nigeria and Türkiye.

Sources indicated that Osimhen’s target is part of a broader strategy to create a structured pathway for young African players into European football.

Central to the plan is a football academy in Nigeria aimed at identifying and nurturing grassroots talent.

Under the proposed system, promising players discovered in Nigeria would join Istanbulspor to gain professional experience before progressing to clubs across Europe.

The initiative is designed to position Istanbulspor as a development hub directly connected to West African talent, providing a clear route from local grassroots football to the European stage.

Founded in 1926, Istanbulspor is one of Istanbul’s oldest clubs, though it has fluctuated between divisions.

Its lower-profile status is viewed as a strategic advantage, allowing transformation without the financial pressures faced by Türkiye’s elite teams.

Osimhen’s reported acquisition reflects a growing trend of active players investing in clubs, as footballers increasingly seek to expand their influence beyond their playing careers.

The move comes during a prolific season for Osimhen, who has scored 19 goals and provided 7 assists in 29 appearances for Galatasaray.

The Nigerian striker first rose to prominence during his time at Napoli, establishing himself as one of Serie A’s most feared forwards.

His on-field success, combined with these off-field ambitions, highlights a vision that could play a key role in shaping the future of football development between Africa and Europe.
