Senator calls for justice over Ozoro festival attack

The senator representing Delta South, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, has urged authorities to take swift action and ensure stronger protection for women following a violent incident at a festival in Ozoro.

Thomas made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, shortly after meeting with the Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom, Anthony Ogbogbo Ibuka I, to discuss the implications of the attack.

Describing the event as criminal, barbaric, and an outright violation of human dignity, Thomas stressed that there is no tradition of a “rape festival” in Ozoro or anywhere in Isoko land.

“Our culture is built on peace, respect, and the protection of human dignity, particularly for women. What occurred in Oramudu Community is not part of our heritage but the act of a few individuals,” Thomas said.

Expressing deep disappointment over the misrepresentation of Isoko people and their traditions, he commended the prompt response of local residents, the President-General of Ozoro, community vigilante groups, and the Nigeria Police Force for rescuing victims and restoring order.

Thomas called on the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, emphasizing that justice must be seen to be served and that no one should be above the law.

He also appealed to community leaders and cultural custodians to strengthen security measures at festivals and public events to prevent similar incidents in the future.
