Wike assures PDP members ahead of 2027 elections

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest confidently in the 2027 general elections, assuring them that the absence of PDP governors in some states should not deter participation.

Speaking during the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday in Abuja, Wike emphasised, “Those afraid that they will not win elections because they don’t have a governor from the PDP in their state, that is a lie.

”Remove fear from your body and have confidence.”

The former Rivers State governor also reassured members that the party’s convention, scheduled for March 29–30, 2026, would proceed as planned.

He expressed confidence that many members who had previously left the PDP would return before the end of next week.

Wike praised the turnout at the NEC meeting, saying it reflected the commitment of members who genuinely support the party.

On reconciliation, he urged party leaders to continue engaging expelled or suspended members sincerely, while allowing those unwilling to return to move on.

“It’s important for the party to hold peace talks so that those who have been expelled or suspended can have discussions on how to come back,” Wike stated.

“Let it be in sincerity and not just for personal gains. Anyone not committed after the convention will not be accepted. You must know where you stand now.”

The FCT minister also criticised some governors elected under the PDP, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He challenged their loyalty, saying, “They accused me of working for the APC.

” Where are they today? We had 13 governors… today, how many do we have? They all ran away because they were defeated.”

Wike further remarked on Makinde’s recent visit to Bauchi State, highlighting the contrast in dedication: “You wanted to be a contractor, and I wanted power.

”You got contracts from Chevron; why didn’t you stay there and leave us to do our job? If you are not ready to play it, go home and rest. We are ready to have sleepless nights.”

Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the party, stating, “No blackmail will change us. I will not leave the PDP. I believe in true reconciliation, and we will continue even after the convention.”
