Police arrest village head, seize AK-47 rifle in Akwa Ibom

Security operatives in Akwa Ibom State have apprehended Chief Edet, the village head of Asik Ubofa Fishing Settlement in Mbo Local Government Area, for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by Timfon John, spokesperson for the State Police Command.

She said officers acted on credible intelligence, raiding the suspect’s location on March 24 at around 10:15 a.m., and recovered one AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines.

Chief Edet was taken into custody without incident.

“The suspect is currently in police custody while a discreet investigation has commenced to ascertain the source of the firearm, his motives, and to identify any accomplices for prosecution,” the statement read.

The police reiterated their commitment to curbing the circulation of illegal weapons and issued a stern warning to anyone in possession of unlawful firearms to surrender them voluntarily or face legal consequences.

The spokesperson also commended members of the public who provided intelligence leading to the arrest and urged continued collaboration with security agencies.

“This operation highlights the effectiveness of community cooperation with law enforcement,” she added, emphasising that voluntary compliance remains the safest route for citizens in possession of illegal arms.
