Fatai assumes role as Lagos police chief

Tijani Fatai has officially taken over as the 42nd Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos State Command.
His appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Command, Abimbola Adebisi.
Fatai succeeds Olohundare Jimoh, who served as the 41st Commissioner of Police from February 18, 2025, to March 26, 2026.
A native of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos, Fatai received his secondary education at Anwar-ul-Islam College, Agege, between 1979 and 1984.
He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, formerly known as Ogun State University.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on June 10, 1994, and has since built a career spanning multiple strategic roles across the country.
Before his latest appointment, Fatai served as Commissioner of Police in charge of the Eastern Port in Port Harcourt.
His professional experience includes serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations at the Maritime Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos, as well as at the Lagos State Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
He also held the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Department of Finance and Administration at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos.
Over the years, he has served as Area Commander in Ilaro, Ogun State; Maiduguri Metro in Borno State; and Area C, Surulere, Lagos.
He also functioned as Squadron Commander of 5 Police Mobile Force in Benin, Edo State, and 17 Police Mobile Force in Akure, Ondo State.
Fatai’s career further includes roles as Officer-in-Charge of the Homicide Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lagos, as well as Divisional Police Officer in Ogere, Ogun State, and in Ijanikin and Alakara divisions in Lagos.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
According to the statement, his extensive experience, leadership qualities, and professionalism position him to effectively manage the affairs of the Lagos State Police Command.
The new Commissioner assured residents and stakeholders of his commitment to strengthening security, enhancing inter-agency collaboration, and building stronger community partnerships.
He pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms and improve service delivery in line with global best practices.
“The Lagos State Police Command therefore solicits the continued support and cooperation of the public as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline, and service delivery,” the statement added.
