AMVCA 2026 set for May 9

The 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) will take place on May 9, 2026, organisers have announced.

The announcement was made by Africa Magic during a press conference held at MultiChoice Studio in Ilupeju, Lagos on Thursday, where details of the upcoming event were unveiled.

The organisers described the awards, which began in 2013, as one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment platforms, noting that it has created over 30,000 jobs across the creative industry, including production design, screenwriting, and sound engineering.

For the 2026 edition, new categories have been introduced to broaden continental representation.

These include Best Indigenous Language (North Africa) and Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa), aimed at promoting diverse African storytelling.

A total of 32 categories would be featured this year.

Of these, 18 would be decided by a jury, 11 would be open to public voting, while three would focus on special recognition awards such as Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer honours.

Veteran actress Joke Silva has been appointed as Head Judge, bringing decades of industry experience to the role.

Speaking at the event, Executive Head of Content and Channels at MultiChoice West Africa, Atinuke Babatunde, highlighted the broader vision behind the awards.

“Beyond the lights, the red carpet, and the applause, there is a deeper story — one of craftsmanship.

”The writers, the directors, the editors, the designers, the technicians, the many hands and minds that shape the stories we love,” she said.

“This year, we are being as intentional as we’ve always been about recognising that ecosystem of excellence.”

Ahead of the main ceremony, nominations for the 2026 edition would be unveiled on March 29 during a live broadcast on Africa Magic channels.

The nominations announcement would be hosted by AMVCA-winning actor Chimezie Imo.

The organisers said the awards continue to grow in both influence and economic impact, reinforcing their role in promoting African storytelling and supporting the continent’s creative industry.
