Super Eagles beat Iran in Friday friendly

Nigeria’s Super Eagles continued their post-AFCON rebuilding with a commanding 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday. The match marked the team’s first outing since finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite missing key players Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey due to injuries, the Eagles delivered a composed and cohesive performance.

Moses Simon opened the scoring within six minutes, showcasing skill and composure as he beat his marker and fired low into the near post.

Nigeria doubled their lead early in the second half when Ademola Lookman threaded a precise pass to Taiwo Adams, who calmly finished beneath the goalkeeper.

Iran, whose 2026 World Cup participation remained uncertain amid geopolitical tensions and ongoing discussions with FIFA, pulled one goal back but could not match Nigeria’s intensity.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye returned to the starting line-up, while Igoh Ogbu stepped in for Bassey, helping the Eagles maintain the cohesion that powered their recent AFCON success.

Nigeria held on to secure the win in front of a sparse crowd and will face Jordan in their final tournament match on Tuesday.
