Wizkid, Ayra Starr shine at 2026 MOBO awards in Manchester

Nigerian music stars Wizkid and Ayra Starr were among the biggest winners at the 2026 MOBO Awards, held on March 26 in Manchester, United Kingdom, in a night that celebrated Black music, culture, and entertainment from around the world.

British singer Olivia Dean emerged as the night’s standout performer, winning three major awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Act.

Wizkid clinched the Best African Music Act award, beating fellow Nigerian artists Davido, Rema, Shallipopi, Tiwa Savage, and Adekunle Gold.

Ayra Starr also made a mark on the international stage, taking home the Best International Act award ahead of global stars such as Cardi B, Gunna, and Kehlani.

British-Nigerian media personality Niko Omilana was recognised as Best Media Personality, edging out competitors including Bemi Orojuogun, popularly known as Bus Aunty, and DJ Remi Burgz.

Several other Nigerian-descended talents received nominations across categories.

German-Nigerian singer Odeal was nominated for both Best Male Act and Best R&B/Soul Act, while actors of Nigerian heritage including Wunmi Mosaku, Damson Idris, Dayo Koleosho, and Cynthia Erivo were nominated for Best Performance in a TV Show/Film.

The 2026 edition of the MOBO Awards marked 30 years of celebrating Black music and culture globally, highlighting the continued influence of Black creatives in music, film, and entertainment.

The event featured electrifying performances from top artists and reinforced the importance of international recognition for Black talent.

In addition to the Nigerian wins, Olivia Dean dominated the night, securing three major awards and being hailed as the top performer of the evening.

Other notable winners included Central Cee, RAYE, FLO, Jim Legxacy, and Stephen Graham, reflecting the diversity of talent celebrated at the ceremony.

Industry icons were also honoured during the milestone event.

Pharrell Williams received the MOBO Global Songwriter Award, while hip-hop legend Slick Rick was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Speaking on the significance of the anniversary, MOBO founder Kanya King said, “30 years ago, the MOBO Organisation was born out of a desire to create space where there was none, to recognise, celebrate and elevate Black music and culture.

”This isn’t just a celebration of the past, it’s a statement about the future. MOBO remains an important platform, and we are more committed than ever to opening doors, breaking barriers and championing the voices that shape culture around the world.”

The 2026 MOBO Awards reaffirmed the global reach of Nigerian music and entertainment, as the country’s artists continued to shine alongside international stars on one of the world’s most prestigious stages for Black culture.
