Ghana sack coach Otto Addo ahead of world cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dismissed head coach Otto Addo with just 72 days remaining before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a string of disappointing results in pre-tournament friendlies.

The decision came after a 2–1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart and a heavy 5–1 defeat in Austria, prompting the GFA to terminate Addo’s contract immediately.

Addo, 50, a former Borussia Dortmund midfielder, had been appointed for a second stint in March 2024.

Despite having Premier League stars Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus in his squad, he failed to qualify Ghana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

During his tenure, Addo oversaw 22 matches, recording eight wins and nine defeats.

He previously managed Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, guiding the team to a 3–2 victory over South Korea before exiting at the group stage following losses to Portugal and Uruguay.

Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, are drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, England, and Panama.
