Senate orders probe into Plateau killings

The Nigerian Senate has directed the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to commence a comprehensive investigation into the recent killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 28 persons were reported dead.

The directive followed deliberations by the upper chamber on Tuesday, which also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate agreed to dispatch a high-powered delegation, led by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to visit the affected communities and sympathise with victims and residents of the state.

The decision came after a motion jointly sponsored by Senator Diket Plang and Senator Dachung Mwadkon, who raised alarm over worsening insecurity in Kanam and Jos North local government areas.

Opening the debate, Plang lamented that Plateau, once widely regarded as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” is witnessing a troubling return of violence after years of relative stability.

He cited recent attacks in Kanam earlier in March, as well as the deadly assault in Anguwan Rukuba on March 29, 2026, noting that the incident occurred while residents were going about their normal activities.

According to him, the pattern of attacks suggests a coordinated effort targeting civilians in densely populated communities, heightening fears of escalating insecurity in the state.

The lawmaker also referenced an ambush in the Garga axis of Kanam, where a joint security patrol team came under attack, resulting in casualties among security personnel.

Senators expressed concern over the growing complexity of the crisis, pointing to its economic, ethnic, and religious dimensions.

They warned that continued violence is forcing residents to flee their homes, disrupting farming activities, and posing a serious threat to food security.

The chamber stressed that safeguarding lives and property remained the core responsibility of government.

It urged security agencies to adopt proactive strategies, including the establishment of permanent operational bases in vulnerable areas and the deployment of enhanced intelligence and aerial surveillance.

In addition, the Senate called for increased recruitment into the police and military to address manpower shortages.

As part of its resolutions, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims and urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide urgent relief materials, including food, medical supplies, and shelter, to displaced persons affected by the violence.
