Suspected gas leak at Ogun school hospitalises 30 students, teacher

Panic struck Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School on Wednesday morning after a suspected gas leak sent about 30 students and a teacher to the hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred shortly after the morning assembly, when a strange gaseous substance began spreading across the school premises.

Students and staff reportedly experienced sudden difficulty in breathing, with several collapsing as panic spread throughout the campus.

The affected individuals were immediately rushed to Ijebu Ode General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Hospital sources confirmed that all patients were being treated for respiratory distress, with some under observation for further complications.

While the exact cause of the incident remain unknown, there were conflicting reports from witnesses.

Some believe the gas may have originated from nearby industrial emissions, while others suggest it could have been released from chemicals stored in the school laboratory.

Authorities are yet to confirm the source.

The Vice Principal of the school, Adeola Borogun is expected to provide more information regarding the situation, while local emergency services continued to assess the school environment to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Parents and residents of Ijebu Ode have expressed concern over the safety measures in schools, urging government and school authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

This incident followed a series of safety concerns in Ogun schools in recent months, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of school facilities and proper handling of potentially hazardous materials.
