FIDA Bayelsa seeks stronger ties with ministry

The Bayelsa State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Joanah Gigi, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the ministry’s programmes.

Leading the delegation, the Chairperson of FIDA Bayelsa, Boma Tonye, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for granting the audience at short notice.

She commended the ministry for its sustained efforts in safeguarding the rights and welfare of the girl child, as well as its impactful interventions at the Children’s Home in Opolo.

Dr. Tonye also conveyed appreciation to Gloria Diri, wife of the state governor, for her consistent advocacy and support for women and children across Bayelsa State.

Emphasising the need for deeper collaboration, she called for a strategic partnership between FIDA and the ministry to strengthen the protection of women, teenagers, and children—particularly those vulnerable to abuse from spouses, parents, or other individuals.

She further stressed the importance of joint policy initiatives to address growing concerns over indecent dressing among women and girls in the state.

Responding, Hon. Joanah Gigi expressed gratitude to FIDA for its solidarity and dedication to advancing the rights of women and the girl child.

She described the organisation as a vital partner in promoting social justice and assured the delegation of the ministry’s readiness to collaborate in achieving shared objectives.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Miracle John, who commended the commissioner for the warm reception and hospitality extended to the FIDA delegation
