Gov. Alia condemns deadly Benue community attack

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue, has condemned the latest attack in Benue State that left nine people dead in Gwer Local Government Area, describing the incident as “barbaric” and unacceptable.
The condemnation was conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, who said the killings represented a serious threat to peace and security in the state.
“Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia strongly condemns the heinous attack carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on the peace-loving people of Mbalom in the Gwer-East Local Government Area,” the statement read.
“The Governor describes the barbaric act as unacceptable, and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state.
”He expresses deep sympathy to families affected by the attack and assures them that the government stands firmly with them in this difficult time.”
Governor Alia expressed concern over what he described as a growing pattern of coordinated and selective attacks across parts of the state.
He warned that such acts of violence, which he said are becoming increasingly complex, would not be allowed to persist.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, vowing to confront and eliminate criminal elements threatening communities in Benue.
The governor also commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift response, noting that security operatives have assured the government that those responsible for the attack are being pursued and will be brought to justice.
He urged security agencies to intensify their operations to prevent further incidents and restore lasting peace to affected areas.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by recurring attacks, Alia assured residents that his government remains resolute in its responsibility to protect lives and property.
Details of the attack were also provided by the Chairman of Gwer Local Government Area, Timothy Adi, who said the assailants stormed the community between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., carrying out the deadly assault.
According to him, there had been prior security alerts warning of a possible encroachment.
He added that one victim is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Adi also disclosed that he informed the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Enemari, who visited the area to assess the damage and deployed officers to maintain order.
He noted that calm has since returned to the community.
