Military investigates death of 14-year-old girl in Maiduguri

The Maiduguri military has launched an investigation into the death of a 14-year-old girl, who was reportedly killed by a stray bullet during a wedding celebration on April 4, 2026.
The Theatre Command of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), said the bullet was allegedly fired by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
The incident took place at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters in the Costain area of Maiduguri.
In response, troops, acting swiftly, arrested five suspects: Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18).
They are currently in custody and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
Lt. Col. Sani Uba, spokesperson for the Theatre Command, condemned the act, describing it as “highly unprofessional, unauthorised, and a clear violation of established regulations governing the handling of firearms.”
He reiterated that the CJTF is only authorised to support security operations and must not engage in indiscriminate gunfire, particularly in civilian areas.
A comprehensive investigation has been initiated in collaboration with relevant state authorities to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
Human rights group Amnesty International has urged the federal government to carry out a thorough investigation, emphasising the reckless use of firearms that led to the girl’s death while she was inside her home.
The military has assured the public of its commitment to justice, accountability, and protection of civilians while maintaining heightened vigilance in affected areas.
